What is MSM Eye Drops – Everything You Need To Know About MSM!

blue eyes

Many over-the-counter  (OTC) eye drops contain ingredients that can do more harm to your eyes than good. It can sometimes cause further irritation and dryness, and some eye drops can even be highly addictive.

There are several different types of eye drops that are commonly used to treat dry eyes and other eye-related problems. You are probably familiar with eye drops such as Visine, Nano Tears, Sustain Ultra, and Clear Eyes Pure Relief Multi-Symptom, just to name a few.

Many OTC eye drops actually work like bandaid. They provide a temporary symptom relief and actually do not address the underlying cause of the condition. With a long-term use, it can actually lead to a rebound effect and make symptoms worse.

I’ve actually used the OTC eye drops for years for my dry eyes. After discovering the things mentioned above, I’ve stopped using them and started using a better and safer alternative.

Have you heard of MSM eye drops? If not, you are about to!

In the article, I am going to share with you everything you need to know about MSM eye drops so you can make an informed decision whether or not this is right for you.

So without further ado, let’s get started!

What is MSM Eye Drops?

Methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, is a form of organic sulfur that’s found naturally in food such as cruciferous vegetables, meats, seafood and also found in the human body.

It’s a mineral that offers many health benefits such as it helps to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and increase energy level. It also improves skin health, makes your hair shiny, and your nails strong and healthy.

When MSM is used as an eye drop, it also provides many benefits. Although it’s commonly used in the treatment of floaters, it also helps with cataract, glaucoma, and dry eyes, just to name a few.

In the video below, Dr. Eric Berg provides a very detailed and informative video on how MSM eye drops can be used to treat floaters and other problems in the eyes.

If you had a chance to watch the video “Fix floaters in the eye,” you can appreciate the power and the importance of MSM for your eye health.

Are MSM eye drops safe?

Are MSM eye drops safe? I am glad you asked. It’s completely normal to question something you are not familiar with. Your eyes are one of the precious parts of your body, so naturally, you want to make sure it’s safe and it’s the right type of eye drops for your eyes.

Yes, MSM eye drops are safe, all-natural and non-toxic. There is no evidence of adverse effect.

A person putting a homemade MSM eye drop to their eye

So I discovered MSM when I was looking for an alternative to the over-the-counter eye drops. I used to suffer from really bad dry eyes and relied heavily on the OTC eye drops. I felt as if I was married to the eye drops because I had to depend on it every day.

I’ve actually started making and using homemade MSM eyes drops for about 7 months as of this writing. My MSM eye drops recipe uses similar ingredients as the commercials ones.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well it has worked for me. It has greatly improved my dry eyes and my floaters. Although I still have floaters now, I’ve definitely noticed fewer floaters. I believe with the continued use, the floaters will be gone. I will write a post to keep you updated if my floaters are completely gone.

This is, of course, is not an overnight fix, but with a regular and long-term use of MSM eye drops, you should see some improvement. Always keep in mind that nothing is guaranteed because everyone is different and we all react to things differently in our body.

If you don’t know what floaters are. They are basically a breakdown of the protein tissues in your eyes. It’s often described as cobwebs, spots, or strands that float around in your field of vision.

Benefits of MSM Eye Drops

MSM is commonly used to treat joint pain such as arthritis and osteoarthritis. It also helps with inflammation, muscle pain, skin problems, and hair thinning.

When MSM is used as eye drops, it not only softens eye tissues, allowing nutrients to penetrate to heal damage to the eyes but also the following:

  • Repairs damaged membranes
  • Strengthens eye muscles
  • Removes particle buildup
  • Equalizes eye pressures
  • Reduces red spots
  • Repairs damaged blood vessels
  • Removes floaters
  • Removes blemishes and other tissue particles
  • Improves your overall eye health

MSM eye drops can help with the following eye problems:

  • Floaters
  • Dry eyes
  • Cataract
  • Glaucoma
  • Eye strain
  • Red eye
  • Pink eye
  • Eye infections

How does MSM eye drops work?

As you get older, your eye membranes can become tough and leathery. When this occurs, fluids are trapped and particles start to build up in your eye, resulting in eye problems such as cataract or glaucoma.

brown leather background

MSM drops in the eye helps to remove waste particle buildup of cataracts and help to reduce the inside eye pressure of Glaucoma.

MSM eye drops works to soften your eye tissues, make the eye membrane more elastic. This allows fluids, nutrients, oxygen, healing agents, and collagen material to pass through the optical tissues more optimally.

If you have dry eyes or irritated eyes, MSM eye drops can help to moisturize the cornea, reduce inflammation, and improve cellular permeability.

Our eyes are organs just like our skin that can grow tougher over time.

Your skin is porous. The membrane outside of your skin allows fluids to enter through the wall of the membrane. It works like a filter that allows nutrients and other healing agents to enter the skin and waste material to be eliminated via sweat.

So when this outer layer of your skin becomes thick and leather-like, then waste fluids inside of your skin are trapped and can’t get out, and the nutrients and other healing agents also cannot enter.

Does MSM Lighten eyes?

There is no research or evidence suggest that MSM can help lighten the eye color. However, if you do a google search, you will find people claiming their eye color changed after using MSM. Some claim their eye color went from deep dark brown to light brown. Some went from brown to hazel.

Many believe the reason MSM has the ability to lighten eye color is due to its cleaning effect.

MSM also appears to stimulate the production of pheomelanin, a lighter form of melanin. Melanin is the body’s natural pigment. It’s usually dark brown or black and causes the coloring in eyes, skin, and hair.

The more melanin, the darker your eyes appear. Blue, grey, and green eyes are lighter because they have less melanin in the iris.

a beautiful green eye

So if your body produces more pheomelanin, it has the potential to lighten both your eyes and skin.

Some also claim that the eye color became lighter. And in a few days, the color of their eyes went back to before and also became darker. An explanation for this is that MSM actually puts your iris melanin-producing cells also known as melanocytes to sleep for a few minutes.

While the melanin-producing cells are asleep, the melanin starts to degrade or die. Additionally, MSM also converts the pigment into lighter pigment, this is when people can see their eyes are a few shades lighter for a short while.

Eventually either your pigment cells run out of melanin pigment or your melanin pigment-producing cells become inactive or dead, causing your eye color to be lighter.

Although there is no evidence that MSM lightens eye color, I don’t doubt it doesn’t have the potential to change one’s eye color.

I’ve personally been taking MSM internally since 2016 and using the eye drops for about 7 months, I can tell you these drops had no effect on my eye color (dark brown). I do, however, notice a lot fewer floaters and a big improvement on my dry eyes.

Since everyone is different, some may experience lighter eye color while some may not.

MSM has also helped my mother’s vision. She used to have blurred vision. She started using MSM eye drops for months and now able to see more clearly.

This is an amazing result.

Whether you are looking to use MSM to change your eye color intentionally or unintentionally, it has the possibility to lighten up the color of your eyes.

MSM eye drops side effects

When you first start using MSM eye drops, you may experience initial stinging sensation to the eyes, but this is not dangerous and will quickly subside in a few minutes.

After a long-term use, you will no longer experience the stinging sensation. In fact, after about 7 months of using the MSM eye drops, it doesn’t sting anymore.

MSM is safe, all-natural and non-toxic. As long as you are not allergic to sulfur, such as foods found in eggs, broccoli and cauliflower, then the drops are safe to use in the eyes.

Some people wonder if they are allergic to sulfa, should they avoid sulfur completely? Here is an article that explains this in detail.

Many people confuse sulfa with sulfur.

Sulfa is also known as sulfonamides, a chemical used in antibiotics. It has no relationship with sulfur (MSM) which is a mineral used throughout the body.

pills

The allergy-causing compounds in sulfa drugs bear no resemblance structurally or functionally to MSM.

Sulfonamides are not usually allergenic by themselves. However, when a sulfonamide molecule is metabolized in the body, it can bind to proteins, and thus forming a larger molecule that can serve as an allergen and cause severe allergic reactions in some individuals.

Check out this article for more information.

So if you are allergic to sulfa, it’s safe to use sulfur (MSM) eye drops.

You can also but them online.

How to make MSM eye drops?

MSM drops can be expensive for some people. Don’t worry, there is an alternative to that. You can make your own MSM eye dropsThat is what I do.

Ever since I lost my commercial MSM eye drops, I wasn’t going to invest in a new one, so I made my own. The homemade MSM eye drops are just as good.

It’s very easy to make and very cost effective as well. You only need a couple of ingredients. Here is an article that teaches you how to make it.

How to use liquid MSM for eyes?

  1. Test the liquid MSM eye drop on your arm to make sure you are not allergic to sulfur
  2. Wash your hands before using the eye drop.
  3. Shake the solution before each use.
  4. Don’t let the tip of the eye dropper touch any part of your eye. If you do, the product will be contaminated and has to be discarded in a short time.
  5. Use 1 to 3 drops in each eye, 1 to 3 times per day, or as directed by your healthcare professional. It’s best to start with fewer drops and work up slowly.
  6. It’s normal to feel a bit of a sting in the first few minutes. It will subside quickly. With a regular use, the sting will go away.
  7. To achieve the most benefit, be sure to apply the MSM eye drops to your eyes on a regular basis.

a person with their eyes closed

Dr. Sam Berne recommends that you do the following to achieve maximum benefits:

  1. Lie down and close your eyes
  2. Put one drop in the corner of each eye and then massage your eyelashes and eyelids with the drop of MSM
  3. And then slowly open your eyes.

Doing this helps to improve the circulation in the lymph manually and you’re getting the drop to go in even more deeply.

Conclusion

Now you have a better understanding of MSM eye drops. This is a great remedy for many eye problems and they don’t contain the unpleasant side effects like the OTC eye drops.

Even if you don’t suffer from eye problems, MSM eye drops are still great for improving and maintaining the health of your eyes.

I highly encourage you trying them out. You can either purchase the commercial MSM eye drops or you can make your own. They are both effective and great for your eye health.

  5. Hey, thank you for sharing this post, my mother uses eye drops every day. I am not entirely sure exactly what product she uses though. By reading this article it looks as this has a lot of benefits as some eyes drops I am actually quite sceptical because you do not know exactly what is in the product itself.

This article has lots of great information about the product and also about the the different parts of the eye itself.

Great post, have a great day and all the success, health and happiness that you deserve and desire, take care.

  6. Ok, I am so in need of these eye drops! For one, my son works in chlorine all day at work. By the time he comes home, his eyes are burning and very irritated (the chlorine levels are way too high) and he really can’t do anything but take a bath and close his eyes. We have tried numerous drops to help, and nothing really does. Sometimes he goes to bed at night, and they are still burning in the morning. Do you think these would help him?

    1. Hey Matts Mom, good to have you back. Thanks for commenting. I am sorry to hear what your son goes through at work. The burning and irritated feeling in the eyes sound so awful. Many of the OTC eye drops do more harm to the eyes than good. They only treat symptoms and do not treat the underlying cause of the problem.

MSM is safe and non-toxic. As long as he is not allergic to sulfur, such as foods found in eggs, broccoli, cauliflower, or milk, then MSM is safe to use. MSM eye drops are great for irritated eyes. It helps to reduce inflammation and moisturizes the cornea. I encourage him to try out the MSM eye drops. Let me know if you have any question.

      All the best,
      Hong

  7. Hey Hong! I read your post from top to bottom and I loved to do so, as it was very easy to read and understand. I can relate to this post because I have experienced eye problems most of my life, on and off, and mostly problems like ache and even winks without my will. However, there are a lot of fake products out there and I appreciate your post for redirecting me to a trustworthy product out there that actually does its job. My questions is: are there any known side effects that come from Organic sulfur?

    -Heku

    1. Hey Hekus, thanks for commenting. I’m glad you found the post easy to read and understand. MSM is not a drug, it’s a nutritional supplement. MSM is safe and non-toxic. As long as you are not allergic to sulfur, such as foods found in eggs, broccoli and cauliflower, then MSM is safe to use.

When you first start taking organic sulfur internally, you may experience some gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, or dizziness. These are normal detoxification symptoms which will go away once your body gets used to the MSM. When you buy an MSM product, be sure to buy pure MSM. If you buy low-quality MSM, it can cause side effects and can even make you sicker. I use this brand since 2016 and I love what it has done for my health.

When you use MSM eye drops, you may experience initial stinging sensation to the eyes, but this is not dangerous and will quickly go away in a few minutes. I’ve been using these eye drops for about 7 months now and I experienced no side effects, only the benefits.

I hope I answered your question. Let me know if you have any question.

  8. I suffer greatly from dry eyes and only use over the counter eye drops. Truly, I don’t get much relief from the Visine brand that I’m using right now. Glad to know I can actually make my own. How long is the shelf life after making it? Do I have to refrigerate it?

    1. Hey Carol, thanks for commenting. I’m sorry to hear that you also suffer from dry eyes. OTC eye drops do not get rid of the root cause of the problem. It only gets rid of the symptoms. I used to also suffer from dry eyes and I became addicted to the OTC eye drops. I’m glad to have found a safer alternative that’s more effective.

The shelf life should stay good for as long as the MSM does. No, you don’t have to refrigerate it. Just store it at room temperature. I’ve written an article that teaches you how to make MSM eye drops. There is a lot of helpful information in that post. It’s the exact recipe I use to make my own MSM eye drops. Be sure to check it out. I hope I answered your question. Let me know if you have any other question.
